How to Use the Search Engine
Assuming you have already started the web server that houses the search
engine, there are essentially four steps to any search:
-
Select your match option: all terms, any term, or as a phrase.
-
Type your keyword(s), phrase, or question in the search box.
-
Press the Search button (or press the Enter key on your keyboard) to
start your search.
-
The Results page wil show your results, ranked such that the most
relevant content appears at the top of the list.
Search Terms
The following information applies to the search terms:
-
Terms may be either words or numbers.
-
Terms may contain special characters such as % (percent) or _ (underscore).
-
Terms are case insensitive, so Biopolymer will match the lowercase
biopolymer as well as the uppercase BIOPOLYMER.
-
Terms are accent insensitive. Accent sensitivity relates to Latin
characters like õ.
-
Terms may include wildcards (*) to match up to four letters. For example,
hydro* will find hydrogen and hydrogens, but not
hydropathy.
Match Options
When searching, you have three matching options:
-
All Terms finds documentation pages that contain all of the
terms entered, regardless of the order they are entered.
-
Any Term finds documentation pages that contain any of the
terms entered.
-
As Phrase treats the terms entered as a single phrase (in the
order entered) and finds documentation pages that contain this phrase.
Other items to be aware of:
-
If you enter a single term, your Match setting is irrelevant as all three
settings return the same results.
-
If you enter multiple terms, your Match setting determines how these
terms are used in the search.
-
In addition to searching for phrases using the Match setting As
Phrase, you can also designate a phrase in any of the following ways,
all of which automatically search for a phrase, regardless of the Match
setting:
-
Enclose the terms in double quotation marks: "installation manual"
-
Separate the terms with dashes: installation-manual
-
Separate the terms with underscores: installation_manual
-
Separate the terms with commas: installation, manual
-
Separate the terms with slashes: installation/manual or installation\manual
-
Separate the terms with dots: installation.manual
Search Extras
To make sure that a specific word is always included in your search topic,
place the plus (+) symbol before the keyword in the search box. To make
sure that a specific word is always excluded from your search topic, place
a minus (-) sign before the keyword in the search box. For example, to find
QSAR documentation that includes CoMSIA but not CoMFA, enter qsar +comsia
-comfa.
